IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR SERVICE PROVIDERS: New Time Limit for the Food Supplement Program
Dec. 22 Update from Maryland Hunger Solutions:
Effective January 1, 2016, “able bodied adults without dependents” (ABAWDs) can only receive FSP benefits for a maximum of 3 months in a 3 year period unless they are exempt or meet approved work, work training or volunteer requirements according to federal law. The time limit applies to residents of Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George’s, and Washington Counties, impacting an estimated 16,000 individuals statewide.
Community groups and service providers are strongly encouraged to become familiar with the rules of the ABAWD time limit as well as possible exemptions. DHR will be mailing a letter to all affected recipients before the New Year. They have also created a screener, which partners are encouraged to use during the application process to help identify ABAWDS. Maryland Hunger Solutions will support DHR by directly contacting outreach workers and community based organizations in impacted communities.
For more information about the ABAWD policy change, please contact your local Department of Social Services or Maryland Hunger Solutions at 1-866-821-5552.
